Top Color Force by Sam Dalal

I love this little plastic top 🙂

This was released by Sam c. 2008 and it was based on an earlier device (quite possibly this one) but Sam did not invent it.  He modified his version slightly and thought it would be more useful with colors rather than numbers.  I agree 100% with him, there are plenty of dice you can use to force a number from 1 to 6, but when it comes to colors your options are limited.

When you need to force a color this could not be a simpler approach – just have the spectator spin the top and it will end up on the color you want every time.  It is instant to set and can be handed to the spectator to spin without worrying that they will figure anything out.

Effect: This is a very simple and very effective color force with a very novel prop. It will permit you to “set” your “force color” right in front of the audience, and change this as often as you wish, enabling you to repeat the effect as often as you like.

The apparatus supplied comprises of a simple “top” – a familiar toy, with six colored spots on it. It is given to a spectator to spin, and when it stops, the color spot towards the bottom is the “selected color”, and is entirely under your control.

Or if you prefer, you may use the uppermost colored spot, (the one uppermost when the top rests on its side) as the selected color.

The uses of this gimmicked top would be obvious for any force, or prediction type effect. Because it is so easy to set, you can “demonstrate” with one or two spins that a random different color comes to the bottom (or top) every time it is spun, then set it for the color you wish to force.

For a prediction type effect you could repeat the effect a couple of times with different results every time. For example “the top will come to rest with the white spot at the bottom”, “the top will come to rest with the white spot on top”, “the top will come to rest with the white spot to the left of the spot on top” … etc. etc. This wording of your prediction for a single color spot misdirects the audience, although you could just as easily predict the color of the spot on bottom (or top) would be white, or red, or orange, or whatever you wish.

As a force, the top is set to rest with your force color at the bottom (or top). However you could combine this for a very effective routine involving several forces, because of the ease of setting up the force color. For example spectator selects one of six different cards with six different colored spots, or one of six different colored tokens, or anything similar. Somebody else (with psychic talent ?!) spins the top, and it comes to rest with the selected color on top. This is repeated a couple of times with different results, eliminating any perception that the top is gimmicked and always comes to rest in the same manner.

You can also use the top for any effect where a single color is to be forced. For example for the Hot Rod effect, where you can show the colors on the top match those on your Hot Rod, then transform to your forced color. This is a little more effective than the usual “Spell-Count” Hot Rod force.
Or it can be a very effective force for effects like the Mental Epic.

Working on a principle similar to the classic Clock Dial, this utility prop is worth much much more than the very modest price you pay for it.
