English Die Box (Four Dour) by Davenports, Unknown
(c. 1955) (Submit Review) (Submit Update)This style of Die box with two doors in the front and two doors in the back, is often known as the English Die Box as it was popularized by Will Goldston and others in England in the early 1900’s. This looks very similar to Die Boxes made by Davenport’s in the 1950’s and on but I am not 100% certain if it is made by them or not, so I’ve added the Unknown tag too.
Either way it is a solid box with a nice heavy thud as the die moves from side to side until the final reveal at the end. The flap may not be the thinnest I have seen, but the handling of the gimmick and the final reveal looks very convincing.
I was pleasantly surprised how easy and smooth this die box performed and hopefully you will think so too when you watch the Speed Demo 🙂
(Notice: use your own hat.)
Effect: A solid die is placed into one compartment of a box having two compartments and four doors. The conjurer makes the die vanish by opening one door at a time very gingerly. The audience however hear the die slide from one side of the box to the other and very soon there are cries of ” open all four doors,” working up to an excited shriek as the audience become convinced that this time they really have caught the magician out.
But the shrieks fall flat as he finally opens all four doors. The die has really vanished and is recovered from a borrowed hat. Always a sure hit and a great laughing success with any type of audience
