Dice Man (DiceMan) by Andy Nyman

(c. 2003) (Submit Review) (Submit Update)

Effect: Dice Man could quite possibly be Andy’s finest trick to date!

The performer explains that he’s trying something new in his life-he’s given up making decisions for himself and instead rolls the dice and let’s chance decide his fate. A spectator is handed a red die and asked to give it a roll to decide how the rest of the time they spend with the magician will go. Let’s say the spectator rolls a five. The performer then displays his “options cards,” six laminated and numbered cards with different actions on their backs.

The performer lays all six cards down on the table in a row and requests that the spectator turn over the card which matches their rolled number. The spectator turns over the card numbered five and it says “Be Nice” on the back. “It’ll be tough, but I’ll try.” says the performer. Of course, everyone is wondering what’s written on the backs of the other cards…when they’re turned over each and every other card says “KILL!” across the back! “I’m so relieved, I couldn’t go through last night again!”

Comes complete with laminated cards and a metal carrying case.

This effect comes from Andy’s Magic Castle act, and can be performed in the real world.

In DiceMan ($30), the magician explains that he has given up making decisions. All life decisions are now made a rolling a die. A spectator is given a die and he rolls it several times, satisfying everyone that the die is fair. He then rolls a final time. Suppose he rolls a five. The magician opens a small, metal business card case (which has been on the table the entire time) and removes six laminated cards. The face of each card bears a number from one to six. The cards are dealt out onto the table. The spectator is told to turn over card number five and the magician will do whatever is written on the card. The card bearing the number five is turned over. The back reads “Be Nice.” “That’s very fortunate,” says the magician. The other five cards are turned over. Each bears the word “KILL.”

Obviously, this is a slightly edgy effect that won’t play for everyone. The method is very simple and the effect is a fooler. Other endings are possible if you don’t mind making up your own set of cards. If the effect suits you I think you’ll have a lot of fun with DiceMan.
