Lead to Gold by Richard Gerlitz

Remember Magiro’s Hydro Die? Well, Richard took the concept to a higher level with an appropriate and fascinating theme … the alchemist’s ultimate goal of changing lead to gold. You now have a reason to put the water inside the glass chamber. Richard introduces a “secret” potion poured from a nice Oriental flask that colors the water a reddish tinge, only to become crystal clear again after the metal transmutation has occurred. What a remarkable concept and what an entertaining piece of magic. The magic occurs smoothly and practically automatic.

As with all of Richard’s items, this was created in small quantities (ten of these I believe) so if you are looking to add one to your collection, be prepared to pay way more than the issue price.

Effect: Since the beginning of time, early alchemists had been trying to change the common metal lead, into gold. All failed because they were trying to use chemistry on a base metal. However the conjurer Sea-Ling used a mystical Chinese formula, that when applied to lead, magically materialized it into a gold coin. Much of Sea-Lings wealth was acquired by this method.

A solid lump of lead (examinable) is placed in the bottom of a glass column, and then filled with water. From an ornate Chinese bottle, a red liquid is added to the water, coloring the water a deep red. The glass column is then covered with a decorative tube and a cover placed on top. A magical pass is made and the sound of a coin hitting a glass is heard. The lid and tube are removed, the red has vanished, the lead has vanished, and glistening in the clear water is a single gold coin!
