Boy what an amazing resource Jim Kleefled has created here 🙂  It is filled with pretty much every lock trick you can think of and tons more.  In addition to reading about amazing props and locks, I love how it has lots of historical tidbits to really immerse yourself in the history of this fascinating subject and a very detailed discussion on the highly popular Seven Keys to Baldpate theme.

The only lock effect on my site I could not find in the book is the super rare Keyrumba by Carl Williams but everything else I searched for I was able to find, and there are many others I don’t have that of course appear too. Here is a list of some of the items that are featured in Jim’s amazing book. Makes you wonder what I’ve been up to all these years 🙁

Details: Harry Houdini became an international sensation by escaping from locked handcuffs, chains, cabinets and other restraints. He virtually created the genre known as Escape Magic. He bought, studied, examined, and performed with hundreds of locks in his career. But this book is not about the locks used in escapes, handcuffs or restraints. Escape Magic is a huge field and deserves its own separate study and research. In fact, most of the mechanics of escape locks are widely different from those used by mentalists, since the escapologist strives to have his audience believe in the rigidity and security of his locks.

This book is an examination of locks used by mentalists. It opens with some historical relevance-facts related to lock performance. Following that is a section on the history of locks in general, an examination of the mechanics of locks, both keyed locks and combination locks, then descriptions of a long history of lock products produced for and sold to magicians and mentalists.

Locks, padlocks and keys have not always been used in mentalism. The premise of a performer using his mind to find the key that will open a lock has a long and storied history, but stems from a single source. This opening historical section tells of the events that shaped a classic plot, once unknown, but now common in mentalism.

The ultimate examination of the Seven Keys to Baldpate plot and the use of locks in mentalism and magic. Locked is 360 pages of tricks, routines, explanations, research and history of lock effects. It contains

• details of 116 lock products,
• descriptions of 107 published lock routines,
• explanations of 26 gaffed and gimmicked lock methods,
• 62 original never-before-published routines,
• 120 photographs of lock items, and
• 85 original illustrations, including fully detailed drawings of gaffed lock mechanisms.

Locked was compiled and written by Jim Kleefeld, with a little help from friends like Paul Daniels, Max Maven, Richard Osterlind, Ray Carlisle, John Archer, Danny Archer, Ken Dyne, Dan Harlan, Stephen Minch, Wayne Dobson, Mark Strivings, Tim Ellis, Mick Hanzlik, Chris Manos and more. Locked is fully illustrated in hardcover with a laminated full-color dust jacket.

You will refer to Locked over and over with dozens of routines that use padlocks, keys, combination locks, locked boxes, locked car doors, house keys and more. There are fully scripted routines that are serious, romantic, funny, bizarre, historical, dramatic, magical, mental, mysterious and outrageous. It has material suitable for stage, close-up, parlor, table-hopping, kidshows, and strolling. Locked is the book to get, read, savor, study and enjoy, now and for years to come.
