Khyber Kobra by Collectors’ Workshop

(c. 1987) (Submit Review) (Submit Update)

From 1987 when Collectors’ Workshop ruled the roost in the high-end Collectible Magic market space.

I’ve had two other versions of custom Khyber Kobras, but this is the first time I’ve owned an original Khyber Kobra.  It really is a beautiful piece of work, and although there have been many pretenders to the snake basket throne over the years, I’m not sure anything still gets close to this beautiful piece of work.  The Cobra looks great and the routine is perfect.

Effect: In 1987, The Khyber Kobra automaton was the single biggest seller in CW’S History (though I believe it was later superceded by Jumbo Sidekick which came out 1989):

  • He rises, but with the wrong card
  • He returns to the basket to try again
  • Groups of cards come flying out of the basket
  • The Cobra rises again! This time, he’s got it
  • He descends (complacently) into the basket
  • But he returns, just peeking above the basket to share the applause

For other versions of the Khyber Kobra check out: the Khyber Raccoon and the Khyber Chicken.  Also check out Viper Pro and Nick Wenger’s amazing Shake ‘n’ Snake for other great snake and card effects.
