Breese Double Reel by Martin Breese, Al Glennan

(c. 1980) (Submit Review) (Submit Update)

When I was a teenager growing up in the UK I used to look forward to Ron MacMillan’s One Day Convention (Ron’s Day) in London each year. There was always some great magicians (Bob Read, Al Goshman, Paul Daniels, Tommy Cooper, Terry Seabrooke, Al Goshman, the list goes on) and a wonderful packed dealers room.

To this day I remember a magician with curly hair walking around repeatedly suspending a deck of cards like a bridge between his hands. It looked amazing! The name of that magician was Al Glennan (which was the stage name of Glenn Walters) and Al invented the Double Wrist Reel.  Al also won the IBM British Ring Shield in 1986, and opened the Gala Show for Ron MacMillan’s One Day Convention in 1985.

It turns out only some reels do the job and this one and the Repro 71 is perfect for the effect.  The Martin Breese reel is basically the same as the Repro 71 version with a thinner band.  And this reel doesn’t require any clean-up when you are done so you start clean and end clean.  When done well it is a wonderful illusion … it must be as I remember Al performing it to me over 40 years ago!

Effect: This reel allows you to suspend a normal deck between your hands like a bridge between them. It does take practice but having the correct reel is 80% of the battle!
