Effect: The Johnny Paul Cups in Bright Chrome! When Johnny Paul performed the Cups and Balls, he used techniques that fooled everyone, even magicians. The magician Al Wheatley studied Johnny’s performances of cups and balls, trying to discover his technique. Wheatley eventually invented the Chop Cup so he could do what Johnny did. You could fairly say that it was Johnny Paul’s cups and balls technique that led to the invention of the first Chop Cup. Johnny’s routine used sponge balls and a particular cup design to accomplish the magic. The trick couldn’t be done with just any set of cups. Johnny states that he only made 50 sets of his cups, so today those original cups are collectors items.
The cups we manufacture today were designed by Pete Biro. Through an agreement with Pete, Rings-N-Things is proud to be able to make the Johnny Paul Cups. The cups have been long out of production and were last made about a decade ago. The Pete Biro design is not identical to the cups Johnny made, Pete’s design is an improvement and these cups actually stack PROPERLY. Pete took the working principal for the trick and made certain that the unique cup properties were made correctly, but also made certain that the cups themselves were made with standards you expect from any set of cups and balls. They hold a lacrosse ball size load (2 3/8″), they have a dish shaped dimple in the saddle, and you can use 7/8″ balls for a classic routine.
Johnny started out entertaining people from behind the bar as a juggler. His cups and balls routine begins with a cup juggling flourish and he stated that his basic sleight for the routine comes from his juggling experience. As you practice cup juggling, you will appreciate the fact that we made these cups out of steel. Steel is a harder metal than copper, brass or aluminum so it is more resistant to denting. The cups also have a brighter, crisper sound when they come in contact with each other, or are tapped with a wand.
Each cup is hand spun by Rings-N-Things from the original Pete Biro tooling in .050 steel and plated with a Bright Chrome finish on it’s exterior and a Bright Nickel finish in it’s interior.

Andrew Payne –
These cups handle effortlessly and sound great. They have a clear resonant tone when struck mouth up and a very bright sound during stacking, cup through cup moves, etc. The nickel finish seems very durable and polishes up beautifully with nothing more than a wipe down with a soft cloth. I was pleasantly surprised to find that each cup in my set could take a single 1 1/8 ball in the attic without any problems whatsoever. Although to be safe, make your purchase based on the dimensions given in the description. If using the Johnny Paul technique with the sponge balls, be aware that while a sponge ball will “vanish” easily, you’ve gotta bring the cup down with some force to bring it back. That’s not a flaw. Watch Johnny’s routine and you’ll see that’s what he did. The good news is that this set of steel cups should handle that with no problem as well as the juggling moves, etc. Overall, this is a very pretty, functional set of cups. If you’re thinking about getting a set, go ahead and do it before they’re gone.
