Mel Babcock has got to be one of the finest wood guys in the business today. Everything I have of his is just beautiful! This is the from the first run of nest of boxes that Mel produced in a limited edition of 25. They have red lining. They use the classic Berg method which is a simple but effective method so you can concentrate all your effort on the presentation.
The boxes are made of select exotic woods: Jatoba, Walnut, Elm, Bloodwood, Sepele. When all of the boxes are laid out on the table they are breathtaking. When I first received my set back in 2001 I immediately contacted Mel and asked him to send a set down to my good friend George Robinson at Viking Mfg. When George opened them, they brought a tear to his eye 🙂 You can’t get that reaction with anything but beautiful, natural, fine hard woods.
Effect: This is a set of five nested boxes, with each one made of a different wood with contrasting inlay. A watch or marked coin is borrowed from a spectator. It is vanished. The largest box is unlocked and opened. The next box is removed and unlocked. When the last box is remove, it is taken to the spectator. She is given the key and asked to unlock it. She opens it and finds the vanished watch or coin.

Move over Owen, Mel Babcock is here
Is is possible to find magic equal, actually I believe better, than comparable pieces from Owen’s Magic at real bargain prices? Turn your attention to Cashmere, WA…the home of Mel Babcock. This is one beautiful set of boxes. And you can do some great magic too. Mel’s use of exotic woods is to be commended. My set was made with Sapele, Peroba Rosa, Walnut (the most beautifully grained walnut I have ever seen), Lacewood, and in the smallest box, Jatoba. The interior red lining of each box, superb! The method is devilish and very easily workable. Simply, WOW!
