Japanese Mirror Penetration (Oak Frame) by Howard Schwarzman

(c. 1985) (Submit Review) (Submit Update)

This is probably the most sought after effect from Howie’s Limited Editions line of magic back in the 1980’s and 1990’s and which was subsequently purchased by Hank Lee c. 1995.  This came in an Oak frame and a Gold frame version.

The inspiration for this effect was created in Japan by Mikame Craft and called: Mirror-A-Cle.  After communication with Domenico Dante I can confirm the gold version was made by Magiro, but Domenico does not believe this Oak version was.  So maybe the Oak version came later when Hank Lee took over Howie’s line.

Effect: The effect is startling. Show a beautifully decorated mirror in a stand. The mirror is large, 16″ x 18″. Take the mirror out of the stand and show it all around. Front and back. Nothing to see. Put the mirror back in the stand and the magic begins. A sponge ball held against the mirror “sticks” to the glass! Then, it slowly penetrates right through the solid glass! It looks unbelievable!

Hold a silk handkerchief against the mirror. Slowly it begins to penetrate through! Walk away from the mirror. Still, the silk continues to penetrate through! As the silk finishes its penetration, the mirror is once again shown solid! Absolutely unbelievable!

Again, remove the mirror from the stand and show it all around!

As the reviewer says, make sure you keep the mirror clean.

    Keep it clean or else!

I have this trick but mine is painted red. It looks a little more Chinese than this one. Mine also has an automatic silk winder in the back and the clockwork mechanism will pull the silk through the glass unattended. You must be near the mirror when it starts to wind the silk on the mechanism and also before the silk disappears else you’ll see the secret.

But the biggest complaint with this product is keep it clean. One person was performing this trick and had some pretty big prints on the glass and the audience could see the gimmick moving. In fact, one loud mouthed kid was reported to say: "Look Daddy, the fingerprints are moving!" which brought a chuckle from the audience and killed the magic for the trick.

So keep the glass clean. That’s what the silk is for, to polish the glass!
