Haenchen’s Deluxe Hank Box by Viking Mfg.

(c. 1993) (Submit Review) (Submit Update)

This is a time-honored classic piece of magic apparatus first created in the 1870’s and know for many years as “Jap Box“, though that name has fallen out of favor in recent times. It can be used for productions, vanishes, color changes, and any combination of those. There are many sources for effects and routines to be found in magic literature such as Rice’s Encyclopedia of Silk Magic and Jap Box Tricks by Glenn Gravatt.

This is a stunning looking Hank Box made in Honduras Mahogany plus three types of inlay by George Robinson of Viking Mfg using the same plans described by Jack Hughes in World of Magic, Vol. 1 pg 70, it has a double load for double the magic.  The dimensions are 4.5″ x 4.5″ x 7″. The advantage of these boxes is that they can be handed out for examination and yet when they are handed back to the performer, he can instantly produce a load of silks or spring flowers.  There were only ten of these made.

Effect: A   rectangular   wooden   box,   sans   lid   and   base   is   displayed.     The   sheer   simple   construction negates  all  thoughts  of  trickery,  yet  from  this  seemingly  simple  prop,  yards  of  silks  are  produced.   The  box  may  be  used  to  vanish  or  exchange  silks  as  well.
