Astro-Ball Cabinet by Dave Powell
(c. 2010) (Submit Review) (Submit Update)Based upon Milson-Worth’s Astro-Ball Cabinet, which of course is none other than Phase 1 of Stewart James’ groundbreaking effect which you can read more about here.
Effect: An ornate, solid walnut wooden cabinet with pewter and stainless steel hardware is shown sitting on a table. Its front and back doors are opened, revealing a glass and a ball. The glass and ball can be removed, shown, and replaced. The doors are now closed and latched leaving the glass and ball separately in place inside the cabinet.
The cabinet is lifted by the handle and handed to a spectator to hold, or lifted and placed on a another table. You or the spectator opens the cabinet, and the ball has traveled to inside the glass. At this stage, the glass and ball are removed and freely shown and everything can be completely examined. There is absolutely nothing to find

Dave Powell beats Milson Worth!
I’ve always loved the Milson-Worth Astro Ball and so I was excited when I saw Dave Powell was introducing his version. As with most of Dave’s work it is a beauty to behold. But what makes it even more impressive is if you look at the dimensions from the front it looks like the ball could not easily fit in the glass without tipping the glass. So when the ball ends up inside the glass it looks all the more amazing. This is quite different from the Milson-Worth version with this regard.
There are only fifty of these so make sure you snap yours up whilst you can. I’m hoping that Dave will be producing some other collectible items based on the success of this one. Dave Powell continues to impress me as one of the lesser known wonderful craftsmen out there.
A must for collectors everywhere, and its a great trick too!

Astro Ball Grows Up
I only own small props by Dave Powell, so I didn’t know what to expect from him with an effect this sizable. In Dave’s case, the quality didn’t go down when the size went up.
This reworking of a classic is stunning. First, the construction is what you would expect if you are familiar with Dave’s work. It is created with care using high quality hardware and woods, and the assembly and finish are works of precision.
Second, the design is a vast improvement from this effect’s predecessors both visually and mechanically. Visually, the piece is elegant and mysterious, with no garish designs or decals. It can serve you well as a straight trick, or as more of a bizarre spirit cabinet presentation. Mechanically Dave chose to make a very logical jump from the horizontal cabinet like the Milson Worth version, to a more dramatic, vertical construction. The conversion makes for a more appealing presentation since the emphasis is now on height verses horizontal space. The interior is tighter, which makes the appearance of the ball in the glass seem more impossible.
This is now my favorite Dave Powell effect. I hope he continues to dabble with the parlor-sized pieces, and reworks some other classics. He may be reinventing the wheel, but his wheel is better.
