The Incredible Caper by Larry Becker, Ray Piatt

(c. 1981) (Submit Review) (Submit Update)

I love this routine from the great inventive team: Larry Becker and Ray Piatt. The props are perfect and the three phase routine is definitely a fooler!

Effect: You start by having the spectator sign your business card and you make a prediction on the face and cover it. Then you show a bag full of ESP tiles that have symbols on both sides and they are all different. You ask the spectator to reach in and pull out any tile (no force). Then you reveal your prediction on the signed business card and it matches.

Now you make a second prediction and have the spectator tip out all of the tiles and stack them matching symbols next to each other. They end up with a tile on top and a tile on the bottom that match your prediction. And then you can do it again with a different result. Very clean and almost self-working.

This is a mentalist’s dream: Fourteen square white engraved plastic chips, with different E.S.P. symbols on each side, an ungimmicked velvet bag, and a packet of white cards held together by a brass clip complete the outfit which you will receive, together with detailed instructions.

Participant writes his or her initials upon the top card of the packet. Performer also inscribes a prediction of an E.S.P. symbol upon the uppermost card, and the packet of cards is placed face down upon the table.

Mentalist asks spectator^ to select one chip from the several ones within the bag and hold the chip within his or her hand. Spectator then announces the symbol on either side of the selected chip. The top card of the packet upon which are written spectator’s name and predicted symbol. They match!

You may repeat by writing a prediction consisting of two symbols on the bottom of the packet. Spectator dumps all the various engraved chips from the bag onto the table, he (or she) stack these chips in a column on top of each other, matching the symbols face to face. Participant announces the top and bottom symbols. Sure enough they match the prediction written upon the card, and the prediction of two more symbols may also be made.
