Mini Mental by Alan Warner

(c. 1972,1990) (Submit Review) (Submit Update)

Alan created this marvel c. 1972 and sold it in two sizes: Mini and Maxi. The most popular size at the time was the Maxi size. In 1990 the mini version was re-released in Teak and it has been one of Alan’s biggest hits ever since. It has also inspired other craftsman to create their own versions, such as Magic Wagon and Thomas Pohle.

Mini-Mental is a beautiful looking effect with a very clever method that will please you and amaze your audience.

SPECIALLY REDESIGNED AND RELEASED IN AUTUMN 1990

Effect: An oblong stand has four small, different coloured wooden blocks resting on it, each sitting in a shallow recess in the stand. The performer removes the blocks from the stand and places them on the table, then requests a spectator to choose one of the blocks. The selected block is then placed at one end of the stand. The spectator is now asked to choose a second block which is then placed on the stand beside the first one – and so on, until all four blocks are back on the stand.

The performer then removes a panel, which covers the front of the stand, to reveal four coloured spots. THE COLOUR OF EACH SPOT MATCHES THE COLOUR OF THE BLOCK STANDING DIRECTLY ABOVE IT. The performer therefore correctly predicted the order in which the spectator would instruct him to replace the blocks on the stand.

  • NO FORCE … There is definitely no force of any kind involved with this effect: the spectator has a completely free choice of each block. Every time the effect is performed the blocks will be in a different order on the stand.
  • AUTOMATIC … The principle used in this effect makes it automatic in working, and the new, improved design and method of handling allow the performer to concentrate all his thoughts on his presentation.
  • TOP QUALITY APPARATUS … the mini stand, which is ideal for holding in the hand, is handcrafted in teak and measures 17.8 cms in length. The blocks are approximately 2.2 cms square and are finished in high gloss lacquers.

This item has received the Magic Wagon treatment recently and they have created a fine version of this beautiful effect with their Elite Premonition.

The apparatus comes complete with The Alan Warner Routine.

    Still one of Alan’s Best!

I have reviewed this wonderful effect before and I still love it! I recently acquired another because I noticed how the colors match perfectly those of the light bulbs in the Wellington Mini-Magic Switchboard. This made me realise I could use it in conjunction with that prop as a wonderful way to predict the order of the bulbs at the end for a kicker finish!

Until recently I had every single piece of Teak Mini-Magic that Alan Warner had created, but I sold them earlier in the year due to a cash flow crisis! As things are improving again for me you might find me re-purchasing the odd Warner effect, but this time I am not buying just to have it as a beautiful collectable but to use them in my close-up show.

Alan’s Magic is wonderful and its kind of a shame that its so valuable as it means less people actually perform it. But his magic is very performable and if you can get over the value part try and perform some of it – I believe you will be very happy and get even more out of your investment.

This was the first Alan Warner piece I ever purchased, and man oh man did it leave an impression. The method is fantastic and practical (as well as self working.) But even more so, the craftsmanship is superb. I was stunned at the level of detail which goes into making something like this. It is truly inspiring. I only hope that my collection will continue to expand over the coming years. One thing’s for sure: Alan Warner is one of the best creators on the planet. In my opinion, he is the best creator of wooden magic. You can’t top his work.
