Mentalist’s Dream Box by Max Krause

(c. 2009) (Submit Review) (Submit Update)

When looking for billet boxes, I think this is as close to a dream as you can get it.  Max Krause did an amazing job in the design of The Mentalist’s Dream Box (MDB) for sure. I’ve owned lots of billet boxes and prediction boxes and this one and the Dr. Q are the only ones I still currently own, which says a lot for how perfect it is!

When Max first released The MDB there were eleven add on kits available.  The one featured on this page includes the Lottery Prediction but here is the full list:

  1. Casino Royale MDB $100 – With very special thanks to Larry Becker who inspired this version. The performer hands out 18 cards with various casinos on them, 18 cards with various dollar amounts on them from $1 to $1000000 as well as 16 cards with various casino games along with opaque covers.  He asks the spectators to look at the cards to make sure no card is similar and then he asks the spectators to cover the cards to hide what is written on them so no one can tell.  Another spectator then collects all the cards into the box.  The spectator is asks to unlock and open the box.  Three spectators are then invited on stage to choose 3 different cards, 1 with the casino, 1 with a dollar amount and 1 with a casino game.  The spectators than remove the covers and read what are on each individual card.  There is a prediction which has been in full view that is opened to reveal a prediction which describes the EXACT dollar amount, Casino and Game played all picked randomly created by the audience!  Vegas bookies would be proud.  There is also two other versions which allow you a way to include cards for a more traditional Casino Royale presentation.
  2. Comedy Murder Mystery $125 – The performer hands out 18 cards with various names of suspects, 18 cards with various weapons as well as 18 cards with various locations along with opaque covers.  He asks the spectators to look at the cards to make sure no card is similar and then he asks the spectators to cover the cards to hide what is written on them so no one can tell.  Another spectator then collects all the cards into the box.  The spectator is asked to unlock and open the box.  Three spectators are then invited on stage to choose 3 different cards, 1 with the suspect, 1 with the weapon and 1 with the location.  The spectators than remove the covers and read what are on each individual card.  There is a prediction which has been in full view that is opened to reveal a newspaper article which describes the events leading up to the murder as well as naming the suspect, location, and murder weapon  played all picked randomly created by the audience!  A true mental murder mystery solved yet again!
  3. Drawing Duplication $100 – The performer hands out 33 different drawings to the audience to examine along with 33 opaque covers. He asks the spectators to cover up their individual drawing so no one can tell which is which and then all the covered drawings are placed into the box. The performer then asks a spectator to unlock and open the box. The spectator is then asked to choose one of the covered drawings but not to open it. The performer then hands the spectator a large drawing pad and asks the spectator to walk a fair distance away. The performer then also picks up a pad of paper and walk to the opposite side of the stage. The performer then asks the spectator to turn away from him while the performer turns away as well so that neither can see the other. The performer then asks the spectator to remove the cover from his selected drawing and draw what he sees on the pad. The magician explains that he is getting an impression of the spectators thoughts and when the drawings are turned to the audience they are an almost perfect match. An impossible coincidence!
  4. Dream Vacation $100 – The performer hands out 18 cards with different cities on them, 18 cards with different modes of transportation and 18 cards with different monetary values along with opaque covers. He asks the spectators to look at the cards to make sure no card is similar and then he asks the spectators to cover the words to hide what is written on them so no one can tell. Another spectator then collects all the cards into the box. The spectator is asked to unlock and open the box. Three spectators are then invited on stage to choose 3 different cards, 1 city, 1 method of transportation and one currency amount. The spectators than remove the covers and read what are on each individual card. There is a prediction which has been in full view that is opened to reveal the performer has predicted the exact outcome! Unbelievable!
  5. Fantasy Baseball $110 – The performer hands out 14 cards with American League teams on them, 16 cards with National League teams on them as well as 2 sets of 12 cards with various scores along with opaque covers. He asks the spectators to look at the cards to make sure no card is similar and then he asks the spectators to cover the cards to hide what is written on them so no one can tell. Another spectator then collects all the cards into the box. The spectator is asked to unlock and open the box. Four spectators are then invited on stage to choose 4 different cards, 1 with an American league team, 1 with a National league team and 2 different scores. The spectators than remove the covers and read what are on each individual card. There is a prediction that has been in plain site that when revealed shows a score sheet predicting not only which two teams would play but the final outcome of the game as well all picked randomly by the audience! This effect will definitely be a home run for all the sports fans in the crowd!

Another spectator then collects all the cards into the box. The spectator is asked to unlock and open the box. Four spectators are then invited on stage to choose 4 different cards, 1 with an Eastern Conference team, 1 with a Western Conference team and 2 different scores. 11. Serial Killer MDB $100.00 -With very special thanks to Larry Becker who inspired this version. The performer hands out 18 cards with two letters and three numbers on them, 18 cards with two numbers on them and 18 cards with three numbers on them and one letter along with opaque covers. There is a prediction which has been in full view that is opened to reveal a $100 bill with the EXACT serial number randomly created by the audience! This will work with ANY denomination foreign and domestic.

These kits were not gimmicked, since all of the heavy lifting was done by the MDB itself, but they did save you a lot of work.  But you certainly could make them up yourself.  The original release also did not come with the custom carry case featured, this was perfectly made by Frank Starsinic and was a very nice addition to the original box.

Effect: This device has a lot of flexibility and can be used for many routines but here is a description of the Lottery Prediction effect.

The performer hands out 60 cards each with a different number on them as well as dry erase markers. Each person is asked to cover up their number by using the marker. All of the numbers are then placed in the box held by another spectator. The box is brought on stage and the spectator is asked to unlock and open it. Six more spectators are then invited on stage and each is asked to remove one color from the box.

The performer than explains the odds of finding all six numbers. He then asks the spectators to reveal the numbers by wiping away the dry erase. There is a prediction that has been in plain view the entire performance, which is opened and shown to match the audience’s selections exactly! Next stop Powerball!!
