Card to Money Clip by Richard Gerlitz

It’s been 2 years since the last Gerlitz item was released, Orb of Truth, and that was quite a mechanical marvel. Now he has released three effects under a Pocket Mentalism Series banner. This one is clearly my favorite. The effect is powerful! The prop looks ordinary enough to divert suspicion but, more importantly, it all works effortlessly so you can concentrate on presentation.

Richard continues the tradition he set when he started his line of magic: great effects, great apparatus, and all in very limited editions that he strictly adheres to. So, don’t wait and be disappointed when that “Sold Out” comes up on his site.

For those who love magical mechanical devices, this will not disappoint. I am glad Richard showed an image of the underlying brass mechanism on his site to fully appreciate what one is getting, as he sends the apparatus already prepared, as pictured, for immediate performance. This is definitely one that will entice you to carry and perform as it wouldn’t be one to display in your magic collection. As I said earlier, the effect packs the power to impress any spectator.

Effect: Magician asks, “Do you believe in ESP?” He then empties his pockets of keys, money clip, coins etc. The Spectator is asked to name a date that is important to him. The Spectator is handed a thin notebook from the Magician’s pocket and asked to look up his date. Magician explains that different playing cards were randomly assigned to each date in the notebook, and the Spectator is to silently note the card next to his chosen date.

The Magician then asks the Spectator to mentally concentrate on the card and states “now it would be a good feat of mind reading to reveal your card, but that would not demonstrate ESP, only mind reading.

Pointing to his money clip, the Magician says “Now before I left tonight, I pulled a random playing card out of a deck and without looking at it, folded it into fourths and attached to my money clip” He then turns over his money clip which shows a single folded card attached to it. Removing the card and letting it fall on the table, he says “Now it would truly be ESP if somehow that was your chosen card” He then has the Spectator pick up the fold card and hold it in his hand. The Magician then correctly reads the Spectators mind to reveal his card and to everyone`s amazement, when the folded card is opened, it matches exactly.
