Rainbow Die Box by Mel Babcock

(c. 2004) (Submit Review) (Submit Update)

When it comes to Die Boxes, Mel Babcock really is in a league of his own. If you have never experienced the giddy feeling you get when you receive one of his packages you are truly missing out on one of Magic’s great experiences!

This latest version of the Die Box, is based on an old Thayer design as referenced in Dr Albo Book II as a Thayer Rainbow or Multicolor Die Box.  This style of Rainbow Die box was popularized by Richard Himber’s Rainbow Die Box c. 1955 including an entry in Bart Whaley’s Who’s Who in Magic and many ads in Genii, Hugard’s Magic Monthly.

This is surely the best Die Box Mel has ever made. As with his standard Die Box, the weight and feel of the box is perfect. You have to hold it to really appreciate how well it sits and works in your hands. All the actions are incredibly smooth.

Now for the extra features – the doors and ends of the box have inlayed wood panels which truly look beautiful. In addition you are supplied with two brightly colored and superbly painted dice, which during the course of the routine change places and finally change into two dice of totally different color.

For the money Mel Babcock probably makes the best die boxes anywhere.

Effect: A beautiful, regulation size Die Box with all deluxe features and two dice is shown. When first shown the dice appear to be red; then turn out to be yellow. An optical illusion? No, one is shown to be red, the other yellow. Finally they change into a green die and a blue die!

I can’t express how wonderful I felt as I opened my package today – but as far as early Christmas presents go, there is no finer!

A wonderful, wonderful piece of craftsmanship.

    Highly recommended!

    AMAZING!! Simply Amazing!

I have become a good friend of Mel’s over the years and have always admired his brilliant woodwork. As a builder myself, I can fully appreciate how much work and effort goes into Mel’s creations.
I have just purchased the Rainbow Die Box! It is my FIRST Die Box I have ever owned and I must say that I could not have made a better choice. Actually, it has saved me money as I have no need to look further. I believe this is the Rolls Royce of Die Boxes.
The price is INCREDIBLE given the attention to detail and extra effects built into the prop! How Mel can offer such quality at a reasonable price is beyond me but hey..I aint complaining 🙂
Do yourself a favor and buy this!
