The Travelling Hole by Tom Minnich, Paul Diamond

(c. 1977) (Submit Review) (Submit Update)

This is the original effect invented by Tom Minnich and sold to Paul Diamond.

Travelling Hole was basically re-invented by Howie and Bob and called Nomadic Void c. 2002.

Effect: You show two thin plastic cards (about the size of bridge size playing cards) — one is red with a hole running thorough the center, and one is black and solid. The two cards are aligned and then pushed through the fist. The hole is now in the black card and the red card is solid. Cards can be freely and convincingly handled (but not examined).

Another possible effect is similar to that achieved in the Emerson and West packet effect “The Whole Thing” — by placing the red hole card on the black whole card, it looks like there is a black spot on the red card. You then show that the red hole card is now a whole card with a black spot. “Of course, if we got a black spot from the whole card, it must now have a hole!” The black card is now seen to have a hole through it.

Best trick of its time, back around 1973-1977! (BEFORE Nomadic Void).

Many Magicians have come up with their own version or more modern take on it. Lest we forget Tom Minnich created it. I appreciate Paul Diamond for the citation to my father, who was recently diagnosed with ALS, and going downhill quickly.

My father sold it at 16 years old, for a nominal fee, decades before royalties were a thing. The unnamed person he sold it to was the real winner in the deal. Congrats!

I am so glad it has persevered through time and molded to fit each day and age it has been presented in. Thank you for keeping his name alive– now and when he is gone.
