Telekinetic Lock by Tom Yurasits

This reminds me a lot of the Haunted Timber effect.  For some people they work great and for others not so much.  When I was playing with this sometimes it would work perfectly and just when I thought I had my groove down the lock would just sit there.

This lock comes with a single key and is used for a Spirit Lock routine rather than a Seven Keys effect. It is a large and heavy steel lock. It is round, with a flat bottom and a tall shackle. It stands up nicely on a table and presents a display easily seen by most audiences.

The effect is very simple-you show the lock open, then close it and set it down on a flat surface. You proceed with some suitable patter about ghosts or haunted spirits who can move objects and suddenly the long shiny shackle pops up with a resounding snap. It will work if the lock is sitting upright on a table or hanging from a bar or chain, and the automatic opening is somewhat under your control.

Because the self-opening gaff is mechanical, you can adjust the timing of the lock’s opening from a second or two to a minute or more. You have to rehearse your patter well in order to have the lock open at precisely the right time in your story. One consideration is that the timing setting will grow shorter if the lock is used repeatedly within a short time span. Allowing the lock to set for an hour or so without opening it will return the timing mechanism to it’s original length.

Tom Yurasits created the Telekinetic Lock and provides a single page of instructions. Anyone who wants a modern looking spirit lock would do well to check this out, although you will have to be experienced enough to create your own patter.

Effect: The performer takes a massive padlock and locks it. He then places it on a table or in someone’s hand to hold it. The performer and the spectators concentrate on opening it with their minds, and suddenly the lock pops open.

(Not to be confused with the Tony Montana effect with the same name.)
