Mystery Box – Collector’s Version by Dave Powell, John Kennedy
(c. 2002) (Submit Review) (Submit Update)This is a high-end Collectible version of of John Kennedy’s amazing Mystery Box which won Trick of the Year 1997 in The Magic Menu – and could have being doing so for many years since if I had a vote! It is still my most popular close-up effect of all time. This limited edition Collector’s version was created by Dave Powell with these features with a hardwood box that has a sculptured lid and base along with two precision inlays. It’s finished in a stunning high gloss lacquer.
Effect: Magician brings out a small wooden box and places it on the table. A playing card is freely chosen and signed by a spectator. Card is shuffled back into the deck. Magician asks: “Do you think that I can find your card in less than 10 seconds without even looking at the cards?” He holds the deck behind his back for several seconds, brings it back out, announces “I’ve found it!.” He points to the wooden box. But, no way! No one has been any where near the box! Magician asks the spectator to lift the lid of the box and see what is in there. It is a folded card.
The magician picks up the box with his empty hand and tips out the card onto his open hand. The box is clearly empty and there is one folded card in the magician’s hand – with no moves or covers he asks the spectator to open the card. The spectator unfolds the card. It’s his card with his signature!

Still the best!
First there was the Mystery Box, then the Exotic Wood Mystery Box, and now the Collector’s Mystery box. You could say its a shame that the magic industry is so slow that one manufacturer puts out the exact same trick in 3 different versions. And of course you’d be right. But given that this is one of the best card effects of all time, I guess its not such a bad thing.
This is a very beautiful box. However, unless you are a collector or only appreciate the very best the magic industry has to offer I can see no reason why you would want this version over any of the other ones John creates. It is signifcanly nicer than the exotic wood versions, so if you are crazy like me it makes perfect sense to buy this. If you have missed out on one of the greatest tricks of all time then it might be worth your while getting the top of the line on this one. It won’t make the trick better – but the box really is a beauty!

Very Nice Indeed!!
Many are already familiar with this effect and the availability of the basic box in a variety of woods, but this beats the bunch. What a nice looking prop! I only have two problems that I see. First, the finish, though well applied, is a little too glossy for my taste; you can’t readily appreciate the natural grains in the woods especially with abundant lighting. Second, the props are too nice to use; you want to only put it on exhibit among your collection and just look at it.
