Luc-Key by Mikame Craft

(c. 2005) (Submit Review) (Submit Update)

The Seven Keys theme was created by Joseph Kolar in 1927, see here for more details.

This is a nicely engineered product by Mikame that includes a wooden bill holder with two large holes in it, a padlock and a set of five keys. A bill is placed in the holder and locked. The performer explains that only one of the keys will open the lock. Four spectators each choose a key and try it. None of them work. The key left for the performer opens the lock and he retrieves the bill.

The bill holder is a flat open tray with a slit in one end, so the bills slide inside, but can be seen throughout the routine. The lock is placed through a hole in the end of the tray. This set-up means that the performer can offer the bill to the spectator who can handle both the lock and the keys. After four attempts, the performer tries the last key and it works.

This uses a commonly gimmicked lock, but having the lock fastened to one end of a wooden holder allows the performer to handle the wood prop but not the lock. It appears very fair because the spectator can try each key freely and handle both the lock and the keys.

Effect: Make a bet that gives you very bad odds, only 20% chance you’ll win! Place a dollar bill into a wooden wallet, and a spectator locks it in with a padlock. The dollar bill remains visible through 2 holes in the wallet at all times!

Show 5 keys and explain that only 1 of these keys will open the lock. They can win the dollar bill if they open the lock. Mix the keys up and have them freely selected by 4 different people. Each person attempts to open the lock and all fail to win the bill! Finally the performer opens the lock with the final key that was not selected!
