Hydro Die (Entmaterialisierung) by Magiro

(c. 1984) (Submit Review) (Submit Update)

This is still one of the very best Magiro items, and in fact one of the most amazing close-up illusions period. This version was distributed by Howard Schwarzman in 1984, and for all the many versions of Hydro Die, this is often considered the definitive version.  The original German name for this effect was: Entmaterialisierung (Dematerialization) and I’m not sure when it became known as Hydro Die, but that is pretty much the name that has stuck over the years.

Effect: What makes this version so effective is because it is so stripped down – unlike later versions by Magic Wagon and Richard Gerlitz – there is nowhere for the die to hide. It just vanishes into thin air! Beautiful effect and getting hard to find these days.

This version I have not seen elsewhere and I’m sure Magiro created it shortly after the more common gold one.  It has a number of subtle improvements:

  • Shorter Tube
  • The Tube fits loosely into the base – in performance this is actually a big deal
  • There is felt in the lid to match the base to avoid any noises

I have both and would chose this version over the gold every time.
