Goldfinger by Scotty York
(c. 1969,1972) (Submit Review) (Submit Update)This was a popular item of Scotty York’s in the early 1970’s.
I have also included a letter from Fred Kaps with his routine (dated April 1972), and a full write up of Kaps’ routine by David Kendall called Goldfinger 2 that appeared in Genii (Magicana, May, 2013).
I would love to have the time and the talent to prepare this effect for you in the Porcupine, but by now I know what I can get away with and without a lot more time and practice there is no way I could begin to do justice to this fine routine. When I see the words purse switch, finger palm. second purse switch, I know it is not going to be for me. Also throw in names like Scotty York, Fred Kaps, Martin Lewis, Roy Johnson, Bill Wells, and Bruce Cervon then I also know I’m well out of my depth.
This doesn’t necessarily mean this is particularly hard to do, but there is just too much for me to digest in a such a short period of time to begin to perform this, even in the safety of my little pub 🙁
But at least you can enjoy the large photos of the props and this would look great in your collection even if you never performed it, but if you do take a video then let me know so that everyone can see the routine in all of its glory 🙂
Effect: This routine uses interesting props and addresses itself to the age old problem of turning semi-precious metal into gold.
You begin by showing a small black purse containing four “silver” half dollars and allow the spectator to examine everything. You then perform a simple coin routine with the coins such as any coins through table, coins across or coin assembly (use your favorite routine and method).
The magician then talks about King Midas or James Bond’s Goldfinger and as he is talking pulls out the golden thumb tip on his extended left thumb and introduces it as his “Golden Thumb.” The audience responds appropriately with laughter and joy.
After the laughter dies down one of the silver coins is picked up and it changes instantly into gold and is dropped onto the table. Then the spectator opens the black purse they have been holding all this time and drops out the remaining three coins onto the table – they are now all gold coins too.
As a final effect the empty black purse they have just tipped the golden coins from now turns into gold and it is dropped in front of the spectator as a final astonishing miracle.
