Eye Tester (Upside Down Eye) by Bill Montana

This effect is based on the Joe Karson effect called The Vision Tester c. 1940 that was released in the Karson Xclusives line.

Effect: This was Joe’s routine:

Original Routine:

You show a special glass rod, and four printed cards. Now you begin to convince your spectator that he has an upside down eye. You prove this, as he can read off the letters on the cards with one eye, but they are upside down when he looks through his other eye. Then when he reads with both eyes, half the sentence is okay, the other half upside down, yet in reality they are all printed right side up. As a finish you show a card with the letters all jumbled up, yet the spectator reads it without difficulty.

Okay, enough of the spoof, this is just pure fun and games, but this item is a great little ice breaker and after all magicians are entertainers and the value of a simple prop is always of interest to most. Even if you have the original Karson Vision Tester, Bill Montana has proven it’s not just the item, but how it’s packaged and presented that makes the difference.

While we can’t understand or explain why it works, it just works. Three cards are provided, along with the special lens bar necessary for the diagnosis. When the Eye Tester Lens is held up over two of the cards, somehow one of the words or both (depending on the card) are upside down? Yet on the first card, the lens reads it, exactly as it should be. Of course as most things the fun is developing a comical routine and amping up the “Right Eye Syndrome.”
