It wasn’t until Dave Powell released his beautiful Victorian Drawer Box that there was anything even close to the Cleveland Drawer box commissioned by Martin Breese in the UK.
This Drawer Box is a real beauty and functions as smoothly as it is beautiful to look at. The workmanship is absolutely flawless, and unlike the earlier Mini Locking Drawer Box created by Alan Warner in the UK this box handles a Poker sized deck too.
Effect: This is the most wonderful drawer box that I have ever seen in my life. I once gave John an antique drawer box about 100 years old. I asked him to make me a copy but he hesitated and asked if he could make the box to his own design instead of just making an identical copy.
I was thrilled when years ago John delivered his prototype to me. I pulled out the drawer and asked where the inner drawer was. He told me that it was there but was so thin that it was almost invisible. In fact with this drawer box the entire drawer can be removed and there is absolutely nothing to see. You can put a pack of cards in it and produce it or vanish it. I like to show the box empty by pulling back the drawer and then I close the box. I pull out the drawer again and it has a pack of cards or some other item in it. I then pull out the entire drawer and turn it over and drop the contents on the table. No one has an idea how it works and the photographs below will give you an idea of how it looks.
The box that has been photographed is from my own collection and the one available for sale is identical but slightly smaller and specifically designed to hold a pack of poker-size playing cards.
I have a handful of these drawer boxes and I have no desire to sell them all, as I want some to take to the next American convention that I attend. The last lot were the talk of the convention and virtually all were purchased by top collectors and ended up in display cabinets never to be used. That is a bit sad because the items in the range all work highly efficiently and were built to be used rather than displayed behind glass. I will probably just sell about 6 of these boxes before this advert is removed from my website. When more stock arrives I am sure that I will have a waiting list.
Ask anyone who has ever seen or purchased one of these fine wooden items from me – you will be told that they are the best that have been produced by anyone ever!

K. Bailey Freund, MD –
Beautiful execution of a functional prop!
I recently bought the Cleveland Drawer & Hanover Watch boxes based solely on the descriptions I saw on Martin Breese’s site-I really wasn’t sure what to expect.
Of both pieces, I can affirm that the workmanship is absolutely flawless.
I have visited the best craft and art exhibits over the years and have been an admirer of fine woodworkers. I had always hoped that more of these individuals would turn their hands to magic props. Well, Martin Breese deserves the credit for finding such a craftsman and guiding him to make pieces that are valuable both for their function and their appearance.
I look forward to following what this team next produces and (with my wife’s permission) adding it to my collection.
