Big Chance by Thomas Pohle

This is a great looking item from Thomas Pohle from his early days in Berlin.  Unfortunately, although it comes with the original German instructions (which I have translated pretty cleanly into English), it is missing a set of printed directions for the game that are given to the spectator.

I have contacted Thomas, Joe Long and others and so far have not been able to track down the missing sheet.  Without the instructions for the spectator I have been unable to figure out a vital part of the routine.

Included: 

• a cabinet with six drawers,
• six dice that are kept in the bag provided,
• a wooden board with six colors,
• a small cupboard with six drawers each of which holds a coin or a token and has a different color on the bottom, and
• MISSING: a set of printed directions for the game.

Effect:  This is a Bank Night type of effect where the spectator has the opportunity to win a higher value coin (I’ve used some nice gold coins and a US penny but you could use any coins that fit), but of course they invariably win the penny.

The effect uses a wooden panel with six colored slots, five white dice and one red die, and a really nice wooden cupboard with six drawers that hold coins.  The bottoms of the drawers have a color that matches with the wooden panel.

It begins: “Thank you for helping me! I want to show you a brand-new game from Las Vegas. It’s called “Big Chance”. Because you have a Big Chance to win really big! In this little cupboard there are six drawers and inside each one is a different valued collectible coin, such as here and here.”

The spectator then arranges the six dice into order and they are placed on the colors on the wooden platform.  Now through a process of elimination the spectator slowly eliminates one dice after another and as they do they remove the corresponding drawer from cupboard and each time there is a small golden coin.

When the spectator gets to the final die – the red one – the last drawer is opened and sadly the spectator wins just a penny instead of the nice gold coins 🙁
