Mixed Up Mouses by Harry Stanley, Billy Day
(c. 1968) (Submit Review) (Submit Update)A “Shouting Trick” that’s DIFFERENT from the usual “Let’s see the other side” . . . or . . . “Open the other door, Mister” . . . type of trick.
Among the proven successes of Children’s Entertainment, are the routines that encourage them t o shout out aloud . . . particularly if they are led to believe that you are Wrong. “MIXED UP MOUSES” presents a NEW angle on this tried and tested theme.
Effect:: You first introduce your “pets” . . .A Big Black Mouse called “Blackie” . . . and a Wee White Mouse called “Whitey.” You show their “home” . . . adjoining flats in the Mouses-Council-Houses! You start to tell your story . . . “Here is “Blackie” . . .the Big Black Mouse . . . and this is “Whitey” . . . the Wee White Mouse . . . Remember children . . .Big Black and Wee White . . . in their Mouses Houses.”
You continue the story, saying . . “‘Now . . . the Big White Mouse said t o the Little Black Mouse . . .” The children interrupt . . . “No” . . . they shout . . . “It’s a Big Black Mouse and a Wee White Mouse.”
You reply “You’re all wrong” . . . and you SHOW that he BIG mouse is now WHITE and the WEE mouse is now BLACK “Remember, children, the BIG mouse is WHITE and the LITTLE mouse is BLACK.”
“Now . . . where were we . . . This is the story of a BIG BLACK MOUSE and a WEE WHITE MOUSE’ . . . the children interrupt again . . . but . . . you show that the figures have changed colour again!
This “Miss-calling” and showing is REPEATED as many times as required, to excite them more and more . . . and when you feel that the time is right . . . you go into the CLIMAX . . . which proves a BIG SURPRISE . . . for the mice disappear . . . and instead . . . they see Two Large Grinning Tom Cats!
