Man In The Moon (Luna Trick) by Jay Leslie

This effect was invented by Jimmy Flowers c. 1948, manufactured by Reg Gayton c. 1949 and sold by Harry Stanley c. 1954.  It was re-introduced by Supreme Magic c. 1980 and also sold by Mephisto-Huis c. 1983 and probably others.   Supreme Magic purchased the exclusive copyrights rights of all Harry Stanley’s line c. 1972.

Jay Leslie and House of Enchantment who started producing this c. 2005 say they purchased the rights from Harry Stanley which might be true but what about Supreme Magic?  As usual with so many magic effects the past and who owns the rights to various items is a little murky.

This is an ok version.  I prefer the wooden version of Mephisto-Huis but this works fine and looks good from the audience perspective.  The routine is fun for the younger kids for sure.

Effect: The moon is removed from the planetary system (a Saturn looking holder) and placed in the rain cloud box. The door is shut and the box is tilted. When the door is opened the moon has vanished. No matter how many times the audience yells for you to “Open the other door” they can not see the moon because it apparently rolls behind the door that’s closed. Finally, both doors are swung open and the moon has vanished. The magician then opens the planetary system and the moon reappears.
