Effect: Happy Hyena is Chance Wolf’s take on the classic Forgetful Freddie created by Milbourne Christopher c. 1951. The prop now has motivation and a fantastic routine written by Arthur Atsma (with input from Greg Carter & Chance Wolf).
Basic Routine: The routine is based on a competition between 3 kids to tell their best joke! All three kids are brought onstage and a series of great bits take place as the kids tell their jokes the Happy Hyena ACTUALLY LAUGHS as his HEAD SHAKES BACK and FORTH! The laughter continues leading up to the Happy Hyena HEAD SPINS DOWN AND SWINGS ABOUT laughing his head off!
The magician explains that the Hyena’s who have spots actually communicate through laughter and this particular guy has too many spots as he can’t seem to stop laughing. A Cloth Bag (Not Included) is brought out along with a Bottle of “SPOT REMOVER”. The Hyena’s Head is placed in the bag and the “Spot Remover” is squirted into the bag, the bag is rubbed a bit, more spot remover, more rubbing then…OOPS!! The bag is opened and the HEAD HAS VANISHED!! Sorry kids, we seemed to have used too much Spot Remover!!
The kids are now asked to use TEAMWORK to magically return the Hyena’s Head! Working together, the kids blow up a balloon, draw a face on it and place it on the Hyena’s body. All together, the kids scream the magic words and…POP!…the BALLOON EXPLODES as the HYENA’S HEAD MAGICALLY REAPPEARS!!

Andy Martin –
Finally a Freddie that is really Entertaining!
There have been many, many versions of the Milbourne Christopher classic: Forgetful Freddie. Unfortunately, although the props have changed the basic routine has not. Sadly, the typical routine is nowhere near as good as the number of versions suggests. For me the reason for the losing of the head has always been a bit weak and the reproduction never quite lived up to the applause queue I had hoped.
Well that is until Chance Wolf came along with the help of Arthur Atsma and gave us the beautiful and very entertaining Happy Hyena! Now you have an amazing prop with an equally entertaining routine to do the basic premise justice. The whole routine is now played as a game show with three contestants trying to make the audience laugh and the Happy Hyena is the judge. At one point he laughs so loud his head falls off! There is a laughing sound box, a neat Jiggling Head effect and lots of fun along the way. It just makes so much more sense and is so much more entertaining than any other version I have seen.
We all know that Chance makes the most colorful, dependable, and unique Children’s magic available today and this amazing Hyena proves the point. If you missed this the first time around, because you thought it was just another Freddie, think again, this is one of the most entertaining Children’s routines I have seen for a while!
Highly Recommend for Children’s Entertainers and Collector’s of fine Magic everywhere!
