Polly Learns a Card Trick by Bruce Kalver
(c. 2002) (Submit Review) (Submit Update)Effect: The magician explains to the audience that he’s going to show them how he trains birds for his act. He then brings out Polly, his talking parrot which repeats everything he says! He perches the small (5″ tall) parrot on his finger and begins the training. Polly starts out with the basics, like “stay,” “play dead,” “roll over,” etc. Now, Polly is going to learn a card trick. The magician says, “Shuffle the deck.” and Polly repeats it exactly. The magician continues, “Remove a card…place it in the deck…mix up the cards…spread the cards out,” and Polly repeats every step. Polly and the magician then take a look through the deck trying to figure out which card the spectator took and the magician states, “Your card is the four of clubs!” But this time Polly doesn’t repeat what he said, and exclaims, “No you bird brain, the card is the five of diamonds,” the spectator’s card!
