Mysterious Card Boxes (1999) by Trickery

(c. 1999) (Submit Review) (Submit Update)

In 1994 New Jersey native Howard Baltus created The Trickery and was one of the early full-service dealers to have a website c.1997. He produced a large number of exclusive items over the years and this one, which has undergone multiple variations was one of his most popular. It was based on an effect that was invented by New Jersey magic dealer and craftsman, Al Largamisino, called Your Choice, which itself was based upon Tony Lackner’s Vanishing Deck Case.

Effect: You show two boxes of cards: one with red backs and one with blue backs. A color is chosen and the box is closed and placed in front of the spectator. Then a card is chosen from the remaining deck The magician explains that the card is going to turn itself face up in the box that was placed in front of them. But, when the box is opened not only has the card turned face-up the rest of the deck has vanished. It is a great little effect that is basically automatic in working.

A real surprise and a great fooler!

This is one of my favorite Trickery exclusives! Two boxes are shown, and a spectator chooses one of them (e.g. red). The lid on the blue box is closed. A card is then selected from the red box and shuffled back into the red deck. The deck is then also placed in its wooden box. At the command of the magician the red card is invisibly transferred to the blue deck. When the blue box is opened not only is the red backed card found in there, but the rest of the blue deck has totally vanished. Nicely made.
