World of Magic – Vol. 2 by Jack Hughes, Derek Lever

(c. 1992) (Submit Review) (Submit Update)

The legendary British Inventor, Craftsman, and Dealer, Jack Hughes, invented many staples in magic that we take for granted today (including: TV Card Frame (1936), Coins in Glass (before Copenetro) (1939), Attaboy (early 1930s), Clatter Box (1951) and many more.

I grew up in the UK dreaming of owning some Jack Hughes effects. It was clear that the House of Hughes was producing some of the best magic around. I was able to buy a few of his items, but for the most part his effects were too expensive for my pocket.

Thirty years on, it is a wonderful pleasure to look through these impressive volumes to relive so much of Jack’s magic. These books are beautifully produced and give very detailed instructions on how to build nearly all of the House of Hughes magic.

Details: (Derek Lever) It does not feel like 11 years have passed since I published “Jack Hughes World of Magic – Volume One” in 1981. Much water has passed under the magical bridge since then but much of the apparatus which Jack manufactured is still commercial and indeed is still being performed today.

The task of compiling Volume Two has been a long hard slog, since Jack passed away shortly after the publishing of Volume One, consequently it has been necessary to locate a whole range of items and their instructions, in order that line drawings could be produced and full operating details published.

My efforts have been well rewarded however, because I unearthed so much material that it is now possible to produce not only a Volume Two, but a Volume Three also. No – you will not have to wait another 11 years before Volume Three is published. Most of the type-setting has already been completed and it will be produced in 1992.

Volume Two has a “different look” as I felt it would prove of interest to the reader to have the original advertising matter reproduced with each trick, but I have to tell you that the prices quoted are way out of date! The items in this volume are not all Jack’s originations, but are effects which he manufactured and sold having purchased sole rights. Where possible we have credited effects to the originator, although in many cases Jack improved the original concept beyond recognition.

Sadly, many Dealers throughout the world have seen fit to manufacture Jack Hughes effects without permission and I would remind the Fraternity that purchasing this book entitles the reader to make ONE copy of the apparatus details for THEIR OWN USE. Any person manufacturing items published in Volume One, Two or Three FOR RESALE are in contravention of copyright laws which offer full protection to the publisher.

Reproduction quality on some adverts is below standard due to the age of the original copy.
