Jeffries’ Rabbit Box by Town House Magic, Gene Jeffries

(c. 1952) (Submit Review) (Submit Update)

What a clever, convincing and easy to perform production item this is from Bev Taylor’s Town House Magic. It was invented by Magic dealer Gene Jeffries who first opened his store in Oklahoma City c. 1947.

When researching this item I was briefly confused because Town House Magic released a different rabbit effect called the Sucker Bunny Box which is featured in Bruce Hetzler’s very useful book Bev Taylor’s Town House Magic. But the two boxes are completely unrelated and in fact The Jeffries’ Rabbit Box is not even featured in the book.

What I like about this production box is after the production has happened the spectator is free to open both doors and look inside and they will find nothing.  This is in comparison with the popular mirror box which always has to be kept at a distance.  This effect could quite easily be performed right in amongst the audience which for a Children’s effect is often where you are, surrounded by the little munchkins 🙂

Well made and looks great too.

Includes:

  • Jeffries’ Rabbit Box
  • Folkmanis Baby Dutch Rabbit Hand Puppet (bonus, $25 retail).
  • A liquid Chalk marker to make it easier to trace the rabbit on the slate (bonus).

Effect: A beautifully decorated box (9.5″ x 11: x 8″) and a metal “slate” (7″ x 8″) are shown. And a on the slate is drawn the out line of a rabbit. This slate is lowered into the box at the very back and then the front door of the box is opened. Audience can see tho picture, otherwise the box is empty. Door is closed and the box can be handed to a volunteer assistant to hold while you wave the magic wand over it.

Front door is again opened … and SITTING IN FRONT OF THE PICTURE, RIGHT IN THE CENTER OF THE BOX . .. IS A LIVE RABBIT 🙂

Top door is opened and the rabbit is removed. Assistant can open both doors and remove the rabbit if so desired. They won’t see a thing wrong as there’s nothing to see! Entirely self contained. You can load it up ahead of the show and not worry as the rabbit gets plenty of air. Use a large rabbit, too!

Perfect for close-up. platform, or stage. Can be done surrounded. For that live rabbit production … this is it! BUT you can also use a spring rabbit plus a tremendous load of silks and hat coils if you wish.
