The Ghost Tray by Larry Becker, Roy Roth

(c. 1985) (Submit Review) (Submit Update)

This tray, a creation from the collaboration of Larry Becker and Roy Roth (R.A.R. Magic), is truly a remarkable piece. It boasts impeccable craftsmanship and, under regular circumstances, presents nothing out of the ordinary – a truly unique Bank Night tray. Spectators can freely handle and select envelopes from the tray, with only one envelope left for the performer. Remarkably, even the final envelope can be swapped out right up until the very end of the routine.

The switch is very clean and even if you watch very closely in the video you won’t see anything. It really is that easy and smooth, and I’m using a small envelope.  If you were worried about angles you could use a larger envelope and no one would be the wiser.  I really like this device 🙂

This amazing tray was also the inspiration for Larry and Roy’s high end Nostradamus Prediction Chest released c. 1991.

Effect: The Ghost Tray is one of the most useful and innocent looking pieces of apparatus ever created, finely hand-crafted by a mechanical genius, the tray will enable you to perform many baffling feats magic and mentalism.

Unlike previous mechanical trays, The Ghost Tray can be viewed from EVERY angle and there are no slots or openings to be seen. In fact, the tray is actually handled by a spectator during the performance of the following effects.

The Ghost Tray looks just like what it’s supposed to be … a black and white plastic tray with an attractive checkerboard design. What can you accomplish with it? Here are just a few of the many effects possible with The Ghost Tray:

Routines:

  1. The Final Last Chance – A small tray containing three numbered envelopes is carried into the audience by a spectator. Two members of the audience are each allowed to select an envelope. They can change their minds as often as they like. Finally, the tray containing the lone remaining envelope is returned to the performer. Removing the envelope from the tray…the performer instructs the two spectators to remove and read aloud the contents of their envelopes. Each spectator removes a folded slip of paper which turns out to be a McDonald’s Gift Certificate worth 500. The performer reaches into his envelope and removes a $100 bill.
  2. From The Great Beyond – Two square pieces of cardboard are taken into the audience on a small tray. The spectator carrying the tray is instructed to allow another member of the audience to examine and initial both pieces of cardboard. The tray is then returned to the performer who picks up the two pieces of cardboard and binds them together with two rubber bands. The banded squares are then replaced on the small tray. The performer now asks a member of the audience to perform a simple mathematical calculation. The spectator is asked to think of any number from 1 thru 9 and jot it down on a slip of paper. The spectator is now told to double his mentally selected number…add 2…multiply by 5…and finally to subtract 7. At this point, the spectator’s total will consist of two digits. The performer states that by an amazing coincidence the first digit in the spectator’s answer is identical to the number originally thought of.  The first digit in the total does in. fact match. the spectator’s original mentally selected number, which was 4. The spectator is now directed to remove the rubber bands and separate the two pieces of cardboard. The spectator discovers that a folded piece of parchment paper has mysteriously appeared between the previously examined and initialed cardboard squares. The spectator is requested to open the piece of parchment and read aloud what is written on it. The magician states, “I PREDICT THAT THE REMAINING DIGIT IN YOUR TOTAL WILL BE THE NUMBER 3!”  Signed Joseph Dunninger
  3. Cash Caper – The performer, holds a small tray which contains a blank piece of paper and a pen. Approaching a member of the audience, the performer asks the spectator to print the letters “I.O.U. $50″ on” the slip. When he has done this, the performer asks the spectator to sign his name at the bottom of the slip for “identification purposes”. When he completes the performer’s request the miracle worker reclaims the slip from the tray, and folds it into a small packet. The performer states that he will hold onto. the I.O.U. until the spectator makes  it good. (Good for. a laugh). Finally, the folded I.O.U. is opened and believe it or not, inside is a genuine $50 bill. The performer thanks the spectator … pockets the money … and tears up the I.O.U.
  4. Predictability – A spectator displays a sealed-envelope that he received from the performer several weeks earlier with instructions to bring the envelope to the show. The spectator verifies the fact that no one has touched the envelope since it came into his possession. The envelope is then dropped onto a small tray and placed in full view of the audience. The spectator is now asked to select any one of fifty-two playing cards. The spectator’s choice is shown to the audience. The performer picks up the envelope tears it open and removes a folded slip of paper. This is immediately handed to the spectator to open and read aloud. The paper contains a written prediction of not only the card that the spectator has just selected … but it also describes the spectator’s garb to a “T”. As if that isn’t enough … the prediction also includes that days newspaper headline.
  5. Reincarnation – A dollar bill is borrowed. The performer tears off a corner of the bill and hands it to the Spectator who loaned him the bill. The balance of the bill is folded and sealed in a small envelope. The envelope is then destroyed by burning. The performer picks up a small tray upon which is a square piece of aluminum foil. Taking the tray into the audience anyone is allowed to pick up and examine the piece of foil. The foil is then returned to the tray and the performer returns to the stage. The square of aluminum foil is now removed from the tray and crumpled into a ball.  The ball is then tossed to a spectator who is instructed to tear it open. Inside the ball of aluminum foil, the spectator discovers a folded dollar bill. When the bill is unfolded  is is seen that a corner is missing. The spectator holding the torn corner matches his piece to the missing corner and finds that it fits perfectly.
