BLS Vanishing & Reappearing Block (1 of 2) by Michael Baker, Eric Lewis, Len Sewell

(c. 2006) (Submit Review) (Submit Update)

This is one of the earliest pieces created by Michael Baker. It was built after Bob Tysl contacted Michael to build a vanish created by Eric Lewis that was featured in Albo 04 – Further Classic Magic With Apparatus by Robert J. Albo.

Five years later he went on to make an even more impressive and colorful version featured here. But this was the original version and what a clever beauty it is.

The sound of the vanish does need to be masked by placing the tube down at the same time, but as can be seen in the video it can be quite effective.  What is the real convincer is you can see the block in the tube even when it is removed from the cabinet.  Also the cabinet can be looked at quite closely from the front and the top before and after the vanish and nothing can be seen. When you first try it, the vanish is quite magical in itself – where did that block go 🙂

The Sewell Block on Rod Appearance is more well known and is one of the most amazing appearances you will find.

Although the later version of this effect is better, at the time this version was one of the most technically challenging props you could build. The effect is amazing and this will look impressive in your collection and it is much rarer too. Michael only made two of these.

Effect: The set combines the Len Sewell Block on Rod Appearance with the Eric Lewis Block Vanish. Only a few of the world’s top magic builder’s have made the Sewell effect, and even fewer have done it correctly or with any quality. Among them are John Gaughan and Eric Lewis.

A large decorated block with a hole running through it is placed upon a stand. A square tube is used to cover the block and a rod is threaded through holes in the side of the tube, trapping the block within. The tube, block and rod are lifted and taken toward the audience. The magician places this assembly on top of his open palm and removes the rod. The tube is lifted to show the block, and again the tube is lowered and the rod reinserted. Now, the magician does not place the assembly on his hand, but he removes the rod and the block does not fall from the tube. The tube is then tilted so the audience can see clear through it. The block has vanished.

A decorated cabinet is shown. It is open front and back. Through the cabinet runs a rod, from left to right, extending through holes in either end of the cabinet. A large block with a hole through it is seen threaded on the rod inside the cabinet. The rod is removed and the block is taken from the cabinet. The rod is reinserted through the cabinet and a door on the front is closed. The block is vanished, and upon reopening the cabinet door, the block is seen to be threaded back on the rod inside the cabinet.

This set is of the finest workmanship. As with all products from The Magic Company, the decals are custom made. The set comes with very detailed instructions and everything you need.
