Auto Milko (Porcupine Edition) by Supreme Magic Company, Arthur R. Hambling

(c. 1971) (Submit Review) (Submit Update)

I remember first seeing this at a show hosted by the Sussex Magic Circle back in the early 1970’s. I thought it was amazing. Though not credited in the instructions it is clearly based on a principle discussed by Louis Histed in his book The Magic of Louis S. Histed.  What is so clever about the effect is it really does look like real magic and you can do precisely what it says in the advert.

For a performance in The Porcupine I decided to use beer instead of milk and noticed an additional effect – after the penetration the beer has no head.  Now in the UK most of us like a good head on our beer, but often in the USA you don’t so the idea of the “Patent Pending Beer Head Extractor” was born 🙂

Of course the apparatus works perfectly with milk too – nothing is changed but the presentation but I thought you would appreciate the routine below.

Includes:

    • three special tumblers
    • clear and opaque perspex sheets
    • paper covers
    • two genuine Porcupine beer mats (very rare!, bonus)
    • Full instructions
    • Use your own beer or milk or other liquid.

Effect: “Hello and welcome to The Porcupine.  One of the beers we like in the Porcupine is Boddingtons Pub Ale because of the smooth and creamy body and full head.  However, I know some American’s don’t appreciate the frothy head as much as we do in the UK so I devised a special process to remove the head, just for you” 🙂

“I’ll place one glass below and cover it with this paper and then place a second glass on top separated by a clear perspex sheet. Now I’m going to fill up the top glass with a nice drink of Boddingtons.  Look at that creamy head!”

“But if you don’t like the head let me cover up the glass and we’ll let the Patent Pending Beer Head Extractor goto work …”

“It’s funny in England if you don’t have a reasonable head you’ll probably take the pint back as it can be a sign that the beer is off.  Of course, sometimes the head does get out of control.  But most of the time 1/2 to 1 inch is what you are looking for.”

“Ok, let’s see what has happened” … (taking off the paper cover of the top glass which is now seen to be empty with just some froth inside) … “just head here and below a perfectly filtered body with no head just the way you like it … Enjoy” 🙂

Original Routine: Three plastic tumblers; one of them contains milk. One empty tumbler freely shown is covered with an empty paper tube. On top of it is placed a sol id plastic sheet and on top of th is the second empty glass. Into this empty glass is poured milk. A paper tube is placed over the top and further milk is poured into it. The Paper tube can be lifted to show the milk is actually in the top glass, yet you are all ready to perform a miracle. Whenever you wish, you carefully lift up the top paper tube to show that the lop tumbler is now completely empty. “What’s that?” There’s something inside the tube?” Don’t, you believe it ! The tube is immediately squashed flat, torn into pieces and tossed out to the audience! The top tumbler is removed, the plastic sheet is shown and there is the milk in the bottom tumbler!

It can immediately be poured from glass to glass. In this method there are no feke linings to steal out. No chemicals, The trick is really automatic in working. You simply have to pour in the liquid and it works itself … Truly an automatic miracle!

We supply the special tumblers, an opaque perspex sheet; also a clear plastic sheet for those who prefer to work with clear plastic properties, and paper tubes. – No replacements to buy. you merely slit the top and bottom off an envelope. Any liquid can be used and Auto Milko can be worked at any time in the show. There is no “get-ready” and there are no cleaning problems with the effect.

We know that you will be really delighted with this outstanding magical masterpiece. Jeffery Atkins, the well-known illusionist, saw the first one and said, “This is a definite hit and I intend to feature this in my show. It’s the ideal ‘front-cloth’ item.”

Can be used under any conditions, even when surrounded.
